Christopher Pouliot played a solo concert in Provincetown last night at the Provincetown Art Association Museum. For those New York City snobs who think that high culture only happens in their rarified urban altars, they got another thing coming. This was classical music at its best, played by a true master. Pouliot played with such sophistication and dazzling skill it was breathtaking to behold. The entire audience was transfixed by the power of his performance. But even more impressive was his ability to transcend his thoroughly practiced technique so that it became invisible to the listener. The pure emotion of the music touched everyone in the room, conveyed on the silken wings of his hands and heart. How did he manage to maintain the mind-boggling precision of the counts in the Granados piece while giving it the breath and space to sing and swing? Pure magic, at its most skilled and sweet.
